US/INTERNATIONAL. Airport ecommerce platform Grab has introduced several new contactless technology innovations, a move that it said responds to the current crisis and what travellers might expect from the industry in future.
Grab has developed a Virtual Kiosk, an adaptation of the Grab self-order kiosk. It allows guests to scan a QR code or tap an NFC chip to order from their own device without the need to download an app. Benefits include (according to Grab):
- Contactless use of the guest device
- Capex reduction compared to traditional kiosks
- No lead time for kiosk hardware production
- Drives up-selling opportunities with less labour
- Deployable anywhere from in-unit to multi-concept at other locations in the terminal
Another development, Order at Gate, is an evolution of Grab’s Order at Table technology, enabling partners “to expand their virtual footprint beyond the confines of their physical lease space,” said Grab.
The innovation will drive “increased basket value, supported by intelligent upselling, while also capturing ‘gate-huggers’ who would ordinarily not dine or shop in stores,” added the company. It said that deliveries could be made to a precise seat at the gate, an element that could potentially become important if social distancing mean fewer seats in restaurants.
Grab has also partnered with wireless charging network air-charge to encourage guests to use its Order at Table/Pay at Table services while charging devices.
Grab has also extended its Airport Marketplace through new partnerships and enhancements. The ecommerce channel now supports delivery, said Grab, with integration available with LocusLabs MapsOnline and the ability to engage through airline or other day-of-travel apps, among other features.
