CHINA. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is tendering a series of retail and food & beverage commercial opportunities across its new East and West concourses, which will be opened in October.
The new concourses span 150,000sq m, including 8,000sq m of commercial space. Both locations will handle mainly domestic traffic – 88% of passengers through Baiyun in 2008 were domestic.
The tenders cover some 3,800sq m of branded stores, 1,700sq m of other retail and 2,200sq m of food & beverage outlets, Carijn J.M. Manders, International Project Manager China for the Schiphol Group told The Moodie Report.
As reported, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is being assisted in the tender process by the Schiphol Group, with which it signed a commercial contract in April 2008 (click here for our original story about the agreement).
Schiphol Group is advising its Chinese partners on how to increase non-aeronautical revenues (shops, restaurants, and other consumer services) and also on the floor planning of the new concourses. It hopes to attract international and local companies to the various tenders.
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport is one of the three major hub airports in Mainland China. It operates 39 international air routes, 114 domestic air routes and two regional air routes for passenger flights. In 2008 it welcomed 33.4 million passengers.
With the help of selected concessionaires, Baiyun Airport hopes to create an international airport infused with local culture and flavours, the airport said.
For the branded stores, Baiyun Airport is seeking “middle- to high-end” brands in the areas of fashion apparel, leathergoods, shoes, perfumes & cosmetics, and accessories, to feature in specialty or multi-brand store formats. The food & beverage area will include restaurants, fast food outlets, cafés and a food court. The remaining retail space will consist of specialty convenience stores, news & books, as well as vending machines and well-being services. Liquor & tobacco units will also be tendered, though these will be duty paid, not duty free.
The contracts for the retail concessions will run for three years, while food & beverage contracts will run for five years.
Tender documents will be available at Baiyun Airport during the following periods: (for food & beverage and other retail) 26 March – 8 April, 9am-5pm on working days, and (for branded stores) 20-24 April, 9am-5pm daily.
A site visit will be organised for interested parties on 13 April, 9am at the Baiyun International Airport. The registration deadline for the visit is 11 April, 5pm.
