CHINA. Offshore duty free stores in Sanya and Haikou remain closed today (11 August) due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Hainan.
As reported, the Haikou stores run by China Duty Free Group, GDF Plaza and Shenzhen Duty-Free Group/DFS Group were all forced to shut their offline operations on 8 August before being allowed to reopen the next day and then closing again on 10 August.
“At this point the Haikou lockdown will be till tonight 8pm but it potentially may continue to till tomorrow,” a senior Haikou duty free retailer told The Moodie Davitt Report today.
According to New Hainan, 2,156 previously stranded tourists in Sanya have now returned to the Mainland. New Hainan is part of Hainan Hinews Media Co, The Moodie Davitt Report’s strategic partner in Hainan.
But new locally transmitted cases yesterday surged from 285 to 559, suggesting that the crisis still has a way to run.
Most cases to date are in Sanya to the south, which means that the stores there run by China Duty Free Group (Haitang Bay), CNSC and HTDF there remain shut.
New Hainan reported that 2,764,224 people were tested across four Haikou City districts in the third round of global nucleic acid screening on 10 August. As of 9am today (11 August) all returned negative results.
