Hawaii visitor numbers and spend decline again in April

USA (HAWAII). Visitor numbers to Hawaii dropped by -0.7% to 662,553 in April, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. A marginal increase in arrivals by air (+0.3%) was offset by a dramatic decrease in cruise traffic (-22.2%).

April was the eighth consecutive month in which spend has declined in Hawaii; total visitor expenditure declined by -2.2% to US$1.1 billion.

Arrivals from the US West Coast – Hawaii’s biggest visitor source – declined by -1.4% to 274,656 visitors in April. But daily spend from those arrivals increased by +4.5%, resulting in a total spending increase of +2.9%, to US$394.1 million.

Among high-spending duty free nationalities, Japanese tourists visited Hawaii in smaller numbers (down -1.6% to 98,686 visitors) in April but spent more – US$271 per person each day (+3.4%).

Arrivals from China also increased (+4% to 11,671), but arrivals from Korea (-3.8% to 15,727) were lower compared to April 2013. Boosted by new air services, arrivals from Taiwan nearly doubled to 1,209 visitors.

For the year to date total visitor arrivals have declined by -2.6% (to 2.72 million), with expenditure dropping -2.9% to US$4.9 billion.

Visitors from Korea (+5.6%), China (+2.5%) and Taiwan (+197.7%) have all grown in the first four months of the year, although spending has been mixed; daily spending by Chinese visitors rose by +2.4 percent to US$407 per person – the highest of all visitor markets – while daily spend by Korea n visitors fell by -3.3% to $255 per person.
