HDC Shilla Duty Free names Kim Chung-hwan as co-CEO

Kim Chung-hwan: A long career at Samsung Corp since 1983, with the last six years at Hotel Shilla

SOUTH KOREA. HDC Shilla Duty Free, the joint venture between Hotel Shilla and Hyundai Development Company, has named Kim Chung-hwan as its new co-CEO, following a shareholders’ meeting. HDC Shilla runs Shilla IPark duty free, which opened last year in 30,400sq m of space.

Kim was previously Vice President at Hotel Shilla and will lead the company alongside Yang Chang-hoon. As reported, Gil-han Lee recently left his post as co-CEO.

According to a statement from Shilla shared with The Moodie Davitt Report, Kim joined the Samsung C & T Corporation in 1983 and worked in various roles including overseas expatriates, management, finance and green energy until 2011, when he moved to Hotel Shilla.

Since then he has worked in the duty free business as Business Planning Director, General Manager and Sales Manager. At the end of 2015, he took on a senior sales and marketing role for Shilla’s Korean duty free business.

HDC Shilla Duty Free Shop said: “We are expecting [the appointment] to be an opportunity to revitalise the sales of HDC Shilla Duty Free shop, which has stagnated due to recent problems [the fall in Chinese tourists to Korea following the THAAD controversy -Ed].”
