Heathrow Airport hits new passenger traffic highs in August

The SSP-run Starbucks at Heathrow T5 has seen sales surge since opening in late June amid soaring passenger traffic

UK. London Heathrow Airport served 7.97 million passengers in August, up by +5.5% year-on-year. The figure represented the fourth month in a row of record traveller volumes.

The UK’s largest gateway served 82.6 million passengers in the last 12 months and is on track to welcome 30 million between June and September – a first for the airport.

On Sunday 18 August 269,000 passengers used Heathrow, making it the busiest day ever. The month also saw a record 13 days with over 260,000 passengers and the busiest week ever (13 – 19 August) with 1.8 million.

Departing passenger numbers remained consistently over 130,000 daily for most of August, with Spain, Greece, Italy and Türkiye among the most popular summer break destinations.

Amid the surge in volume, Los Angeles and Madrid joined the list of city routes with over one million passengers, which already includes Doha, Dublin and New York.

The airport company highlighted how busy its 275 shops and 75 restaurants have been during the recent period – citing the example of Pret A Manger, which sold 950,749 coffees in July and August.

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said: “I’m grateful to Team Heathrow for their preparation and dedication to delivering an extraordinary getaway for more passengers than ever before, maintaining strong service levels during what has been our busiest summer. For the past four months we have broken several new records, demonstrating our ability to open a world of opportunity for more people, cargo, business and the UK economy.” ✈
