Heathrow Airport passenger growth maintains momentum as third runway proposals take shape

UK. London Heathrow Airport served 6.3 million passengers in January, a rise of +5.4% year-on-year and a record high for the month.

January marked the 11th month in a row Heathrow averaged over 200,000 passengers a day, with transatlantic travel a key contributor. Over 1.2 million passengers travelled between the UK and US, up +8% compared with January 2024.

As reported, Heathrow also recently relaunched its private terminal VIP service as The Windsor. VIP client movements at Heathrow have doubled over the last ten years, and should double again in the next three years, said the airport company.

Heathrow welcomed UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ support for a third runway, announced on 29 January. The Chancellor said she wanted to see work begin in the current five-year Parliament term and for flights using the new runway to begin by 2035.

A Heathrow statement said: “To successfully deliver this project at pace will require policy changes, including on airspace modernisation, planning policy reform and changes to the regulatory regime. We are now working with our stakeholders to finalise our plans and will submit our proposal to Government by the summer.”

Heathrow CEO Thomas Woldbye said: “2025 has started how we mean to go on – serving record-breaking passenger numbers and delivering trade and investment across the whole of the UK. To ensure we continue on this upwards trajectory, the Government has signalled their support for an expanded Heathrow. We’ll now work with Ministers to progress the necessary policy changes required to advance our growth plans.” ✈
