AUSTRALIA. Heinemann Australia has introduced complimentary reusable shopping bags in its Sydney Airport duty free stores.
The scheme is being supported by American Express.
The retailer said that the initiative has received a positive response from arriving and departing passengers who have welcomed the environmentally friendly approach.
“The removal of our plastic bags is a milestone toward improving our carbon footprint and creating awareness amongst international passengers.” – Heinemann Australia Managing Director Richard Goodman
The retailer noted: “Following the release of parent company Gebr. Heinemann’s Corporate Responsibility report ‘Think & Rethink’*, this only comes as a natural step for Heinemann Australia’s journey towards greater sustainability.”
The Corporate Responsibility Report guides readers through the ideas and initiatives the German travel retailer has identified and realised so far in the commercial, workplace and environmental areas.
Heinemann Australia Managing Director Richard Goodman said: “We are delighted to take this important step into more sustainable operation in Sydney. Although we see this as one pivotal improvement in Heinemann’s journey to greater sustainability in travel retail, the removal of our plastic bags is a milestone toward improving our carbon footprint and creating awareness amongst international passengers.”
For Heinemann’s Sydney stores, future initiatives include offering alternatives to single-use plastic bottles sold in-store; replacing existing plastic glass bottle protectors; optimising recycling processes; and the reduction of truck usage in order to reduce carbon footprint.
