HMSHost unveils staff uniforms with a difference at Schiphol airport

Getting shirty: A total of 10 PET bottles are used in each uniform according to HMSHost

THE NETHERLANDS. HMSHost has shown it has got the bottle for corporate social responsibility with a new recycling initiative at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.

All shirts worn by staff at GrabandFly outlets there, and in other European countries, are now being made from recycled PET bottles.

At Schiphol, HMSHost says it sells nearly 3.4 million PET bottles annually, and all of them can be disposed of separately for recycling. The company, with its largest soft drinks partner Coca-Cola, investigated the possibility of using the bottles for use as polyester. Following extensive tests, a shirt made from 80% recycled PET bottles and 20% cotton has been developed.

United Oceans, Coca-Cola and HMSHost have now begun a project to produce a number of clothing lines using recycled PET.

According to HMSHost, the shirts for the GrabandFly to go concept and the Street Food Market in Schiphol’s Lounge 2 contain a total of 10 PET bottles. An international roll-out to all GrabandFly locations worldwide is now being planned.

“This development is a definite step toward making our operations fully sustainable. Sustainability is a word on many people’s lips, but taking it from the realm of mere concept and turning it into concrete projects is evidence that sustainability is truly in our DNA,” said HMSHost International Food and Beverage Director Bastiaan van Asten.
