Hong Kong Airport passenger traffic improves sharply in June but lags pre-pandemic figures

HONG KONG, CHINA. Hong Kong International Airport served 4.3 million passengers in June, up by +29% from a year earlier, but still down by -32% on pre-pandemic 2019.

The latest traffic results released by Airport Authority Hong Kong revealed a +32.3% growth in aircraft movements last month to 29,590, compared to the same month in 2023.

The authority noted a continued increase in all passenger segments, including Hong Kong residents and visitors, as well as transfer/transit passengers.

The airport’s top markets for June were Southeast Asia, Mainland China and Japan.

In the first half of the year 25.3 million passengers travelled through Hong Kong Airport, a year-on-year increase of +52.8%.

Flight movements during the first six months also climbed by +47% year-on year to 174,745.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger traffic increased sharply by +125.9% year-on-year to 48.2 million, while flight movements surged by nearly +69.9% to 332,040.

On 21 July, passenger numbers at Hong Kong Airport stood at 171,000, the highest single-day record since the pandemic.

AAHK is expecting a continued surge in passengers during the peak summer travel period and expressed confidence Hong Kong Airport will restore its passenger traffic to pre-pandemic levels by the end of the year. ✈
