“Hong Kong International Airport is committed to helping its business partners succeed. As the Asia Pacific region has shown signs of economic stabilisation, we believe that extending these contracts will provide a stable environment for our partners to develop their businesses,” said Eva Tsang, General Manager, Retail and Advertising, Airport Authority Hong Kong.

Despite the current economic climate, Hong Kong International Airport said it continues to invest to improve the visitor experience and business opportunities for partners.

A number of facility enhancement projects are under way at Terminal 1, such as the expansion of the Arrivals transfer area. In addition new facilities are also being built.

By the end of 2009 the new North Satellite Concourse will provide ten bridge-served stands, and Skypier – a permanent cross-boundary ferry pier – will replace a temporary pier that has been in operation since 2003.

Both projects will offer additional space for retailers.

HKIA is the fourth-busiest international airport worldwide. It served a total of 48.6 million passengers in 2008.

Eva Tsang will be one of the main speakers at next month’s Trinity Forum in Macau (23-25 September).

The scale of the retail opportunities has been underlined by a HKIA Passengers’ Tracking Survey for March 2009. It revealed that HKIA passengers on average spent nearly three hours in Terminal 1, with an average shopping spend of about HK$600 per person (US$77.40).

Based on the same survey, 70% of passengers at HKIA are from within the Asia Pacific region and, among them, 27% are from the Chinese Mainland.

Mainland consumers contributed an average of over HK$1,100 (US$142) per person at HKIA, the survey revealed.

Further, it reported that over 50% of HKIA users are professionals, managers, executives and businessmen. The corresponding high-spending ability of this passenger group offers solid business prospects for potential businesses, Airport Authority Hong Kong said.
