Image of the Day: Amarula welcomes travellers to Johannesburg in true African style

Our regular feature celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

Trunk call: Our Brands Director Hannah Tan-Gillies couldn’t resist the urge to snap a photo with the Amarula elephants in OR Tambo International Airport

SOUTH AFRICA. Today’s choice comes from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport where Distell is promoting its hugely popular South African cream liqueur brand Amarula with a safari-inspired installation.

The Moodie Davitt Report Brands Director Hannah Tan-Gillies was suitably impressed, stopping for the first of what will no doubt be many holiday snaps – a prime example of an airport (and in this case travel retail) being an experiential part of the traveller journey.

The vibrant animation, which pays homage to Amarula’s elephant logo, is located after immigration in Terminal A, giving arriving passengers a great photo opportunity before they start their South African adventure.

Amarula is the only cream liqueur to feature the flavour of the marula fruit, a fruit only found in sub-Saharan Africa.

As reported, Distell is promoting the brand’s newest expression, Amarula Chocolate, with in-store promotions in partnership with Big Five Duty Free.✈

Heavy advertising, an interactive AR game, free ice cream scoops and gifts with purchase have all featured in the Amarula Chocolate launch
