The primary image above captures the arrival of Iberia flight IB121, an Airbus A350, which touched down on Sunday afternoon (1 June) and was welcomed with a traditional water salute.

The opening was preceded by a two-week soft launch period involving four airlines to ensure an efficient start of operations and operational stability.

“Today, Peru marks a new milestone. The inauguration of the new Jorge Chávez International Airport is a world-class achievement – a symbol of the joint effort between the State, the private sector, and all Peruvians to better connect our country with the world.” – President of Peru, Dina Boluarte

As reported, the new terminal is three times larger than the previous one. By the end of 2025, it will be expanded further to cover 270,000sq m, providing capacity to serve up to 40 million passengers annually. With its modular design, the terminal’s capacity can be increased to accommodate future growth.

“This airport will generate around 121,000 jobs, directly benefitting nearby communities. Moreover, it will serve as a key engine for the country’s economic growth, creating opportunities for future generations, fostering business, and promoting tourism recovery.” – Lima Airport Partners CEO Juan José Salmón

The inauguration was graced by Republic of Peru President Dina Boluarte, dressed in celebratory white. “We are building a Peru that not only looks to the future but leads it – a country that connects continents, drives development, and is recognised and admired in Latin America and the world,” she said. Key elements of the US$2 billion expansion programme, which began in 2019, include a second runway (which became operational in spring 2023), a new air traffic control tower, additional aircraft parking positions, energy supply facilities, improved transportation links, and expanded parking facilities for passengers and visitors.

Fraport AG has been operating in Lima since 2001.

Lima Airport served 24.5 million passengers in 2024, with the figure projected to increase this year. It is Fraport Group’s third-busiest hub, following Frankfurt and Antalya.

“The opening of the terminal is a milestone – not just for Fraport, but also for Peru and South America. Our goal is to make Lima one of the continent’s most important hubs, providing a boost to tourism, air cargo traffic and connectivity for all Peruvians.” – Fraport CEO Dr Stefan Schulte
