NEW ZEALAND. Wellington Airport has chosen a colourful and expressive way to welcome visitors to the New Zealand capital city’s Pride Festival and the World International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) Conference.
A 3,000sq m pride rainbow – roughly the equivalent of eight netball courts – has claimed pride of place along the grass embankment of the airport’s runway. Painting the rainbow, with special temporary turf paint which lasts up to four weeks, took around three days to complete.

Wellington Airport CEO Steve Sanderson said the airport is a proud supporter of events such as the Wellington Pride Festival, adding that the rainbow “makes quite an impression on the landscape”.
Wellington Mayor Justin Lester also expressed delight with the project. “Wellington is one of the most inclusive cities on the planet and we want to show our pride at holding the ILGA World Conference. The airport rainbow will be the first many ILGA attendees see and I am sure it will make them feel welcome,” he said.
