Images of the Day: Is Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru arrivals duty-free the world’s best?

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Strange Nature Gin from New Zealand, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

INDIA. Prepare to be wowed.

Arriving at Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru Terminal 2 is like stepping simultaneously into a new India and yet one wrapped in the nation’s rich heritage and culture, writes Martin Moodie.

I took today’s choice of photos in the wee small hours of this morning after I flew in from Hong Kong for a series of events and meetings here with the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) team. The terminal, inagurated at the end of 2023, simply dazzles from the moment you step off the plane.

Most of my shots below are of the arrivals duty-free store (run in a joint venture between Bangalore International Airport Limited and Avolta), which I rank among the best – perhaps the best – I have seen across nearly four decades of doing this job.

Great product ranging across all key categories; an admirable focus on localisation; superb visual impact; impactful use of digital; plentiful and helpful staff; architecture and design (courtesy of The Design Solution) to die for. Heck, this store has it all. And it is paying off, for I saw a lot of business being done.

Terminal 2 is built around four pillars: Terminal in a Garden, Sustainability; Technology; Art & Culture. All are beautifully on show as you enter the airport and then enter the vast expanse (1,896sq m of retail space) of the duty-free store.

I’ll let the pictures tell the story for now. Look out for my full reports, both on the website that never sleeps and The Moodie Blog in the days and weeks ahead. ✈

This picture tells its own story as arriving passengers queue up to complete their purchases. In days gone by, much of this spend would have happened in departures duty-free stores abroad, particularly in the Middle East. The dramatic improvement in Indian airport retail standards and growth of arrivals duty-free shopping has changed the balance markedly.
