India tourism rises as tensions fade

INDIA. Arrivals in India rose about 13% on year in February as tensions with Pakistan and the after effects of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US abated, said an official at the Tourism Ministry this week. February saw 272,688 travelers arrive in India compared with 241,133 visitors in the same month in 2002, provisional government data showed.

“Since October, a revival trend has set in,” said the official. But the number of visitors in February was slightly lower than in January when 278,298 visitors arrived in the country. Tourist arrivals are expected to be higher year-on-year in March, but a possible war in Iraq would weigh on India’s tourism industry said the Ministry.
