International passenger traffic surges by +56.8% at Thailand’s major airports in December 2009 – 12/01/10

THAILAND. Airports of Thailand (AoT) has announced a +56.8% year-on-year surge in international passengers for December across its airport network – Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang in Bangkok, as well as Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Chiang Rai.

The figures benefit from comparison with a disastrous year-end in 2008 due to the the country’s political upheaval.

ALL AIRPORTS OF THAILAND INTERNATIONAL AIRPORTS

December was the fourth consecutive month of increases in passenger traffic after eight months of year-on-year falls.

Total international passenger traffic across all AoT airports for 2009 declined by -4.5% to 32.8 million, compared to 2008.

BANGKOK SUVARNABHUMI AIRPORT

International passengers at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport rose by +65.2% to 3.06 million in December. This followed a year-on-year rise of +9.7% in September, +10.5% in October and +33.7% in November. International passenger traffic had previously fallen every month between January and August. For the full year, international volumes at Thailand’s major gateway dipped by -4.2% to 30.2 million.
