INDONESIA. The number of Japanese travellers visiting Bali in December climbed +110.51% to 20,683, marking the second straight month of triple-digit increases according to the Bali Tourism Authority.
The number surpassed the figures for December in 2001 and 2002, reflecting a return to a normal level of tourism from Japan unaffected by global events.
In 2003, Japan generated some 185,751 visitors to the resort destination, making it the top international market again with an 18.7% market share of the total 993,029 international visitors. Its share, however, slipped from 23.4% in 2002.
Bali tourism officials have begun watching traffic carefully from Japan since 1 February when Indonesia began its visa-on-arrival programme. The programme replaced the visa-free programme in response to worldwide pressure for Indonesia to tighten its security amid terrorism threats worldwide.
