Jersey Mike’s Subs opens first restaurant on a military base

USA. Jersey Mike’s Subs has opened its first restaurant on a military base, at Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The 490sq ft sub shop is located in the Army & Air Force Exchange Service food court, and started trading on 13 December 2017.

The traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the sub store’s opening. Jersey Mike’s Subs said it has plans to open restaurants at two other military installations this year.

The sub shop at Schofield Barracks is staffed almost entirely by local residents connected to service members at the installation. Store hours are 10am to 9pm Monday to Saturday, and 10am to 8pm on Sundays.

“We are pleased to bring our authentic sub sandwiches to the troops and their families stationed at Schofield Barracks,” said Jersey Mike’s Franchise Systems, Inc. Vice President, Non-Traditional Development Phil Capozzi. “We’ve always had an enthusiastic fan base in military towns and being on base is a logical next step.”

As part of a grand opening celebration, franchise owner Alvaro Garcia and his team raised US$800 for Wheeler Middle School, located at Wheeler Army Airfield. An upcoming fundraiser will benefit Schofield Barracks’ Solomon Elementary School.

Since 2010, Jersey Mike’s locations throughout the USA have raised over US$28 million for local charities and have distributed more than two million free sub sandwiches to help numerous causes.  Last year, the company’s 7th Annual Jersey Mike’s Month of Giving in March raised more than US$5.5 million for nearly 150 charities throughout the country.

Jersey Mike’s will open a store aboard the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in California in February.

Later this year, a Jersey Mike’s restaurant is scheduled to open onboard the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek — Fort Story in Norfolk, Virginia.

Founded in 1956, Jersey Mike’s now has 1,500 restaurants open and under development throughout the USA.
