JTI refurbishes Geneva smoking lounge with cutting-edge ventilation

Cutting-edge ventilation ensures no smoke escapes the lounge as people enter and leave

Japan Tobacco International has officially inaugurated its Smoking Lounge at Geneva Airport after a major refurbishment.

As part of the changes the tobacco supplier has installed a state-of-the-art ventilation system, which controls air flow independently of the airport’s general ventilation infrastructure.

The 78sq m lounge is under negative pressure – more air is taken out than is brought in – stopping smoke from escaping as people enter or leave the lounge.

JTI Worldwide Duty Free General Manager and Vice President David Francis said: “Over 2.9 million smoking passengers travel through Geneva Airport every year, out of a total of14.4 million travellers in 2013. This will be a world-class facility, which will significantly enhance the traveller’s experience at the airport.”

JTI’s Smoking Lounges provide both a service and a commercial opportunity, the company claims

Genève Aéroport CEO Robert Deillon said: “Comfort and efficiency are key values for all of our passengers, whether smoking or not. This renovated smoking lounge is really in line with our service policy. We are also very happy to have a partnership with JTI, which is based in Geneva.”

JTI maintains that its Smoking Lounges provide airports with a competitive advantage, as well as meeting travellers’ needs, by driving additional revenue from commercial outlets.

By the end of 2014, JTI will have 212 lounges and cabins in 16 locations around the world.
