JTI rethinks tobacco with the launch of Ploom vaporisers

JTI Austria has launched what is being hailed as a new-generation smoking alternative product: Ploom is a pocket-sized smoking device designed to heat tobacco contained in pods to a constant temperature, vaporising nicotine and flavour without burning the materials or producing smoke.

Founded in 2007 and based in San Francisco, Ploom was originally developed by Adam Bowen and James Monsees while they were graduate students at Stanford University. Since its launch in the US, Ploom has already made a breakthrough in the traditional tobacco market, JTI said.

In December 2011, JTI signed an exclusive long-term cooperation agreement with Ploom to commercialise its products outside the US. As part of the agreement, JTI has taken a minority stake in the company; Ploom management, however, will remain in place and continue to operate Ploom as a separate company.

JTI Austria General Manager Hagen von Wedel commented: “Ploom is a genuinely revolutionary tobacco product. As Ploom heats tobacco but does not burn it, people can savour the full taste and rich vapour of the tobacco blend. Because it is based on vaporisation technology, Ploom offers an alternative that meets the expectations of today’s society.”

Manufactured in JTI’s factory in Trier, Germany, Ploom pods are designed for use in the Ploom vaporising device. Each pod contains single-serving, pocket-sized capsules filled with high quality tobacco leaf, currently available in a range of five varieties. All pods are recyclable after use.

The Ploom device is USB rechargeable and will be available at a recommended retail price of €24.90. A pack of 12 Ploom pods will cost €5.
