Kickstarter campaign supports the launch of new Smart luggage scale

Kickstarter, the global crowdfunding platform, is behind of the launch of a new Smart luggage scale.

The brainchild of softwear electronic engineer Jamie Cruickshank, Weigh-to-Fly is an extendable luggage scale designed to help travellers avoid excess baggage charges. The new device is listed as a Kickstarter project which aims to raise £50,000. Rewards include “˜early bird’ deals and a chance to visit the design team. To date 31 backers have pledged £1,810 to support the project which will be listed for a further 34 days. The retail price of Weigh-to-Fly is expected to be £69.99.

The Weigh-to-Fly device has an adjustable, lightweight, telescopic frame that slides and locks to fit all case sizes. Once the case is placed on top, the sensors in each of the corners send updates via Bluetooth to the traveller’s smartphone, allowing them to see how close they are to their weight limit as they pack.

Weigh-to-Fly weighs 450g. Its dimensions are 41 x 39cm (folded) and 41 x 55cm (unfolded), maximum bag weight is 40kg and its Lithium Polymer battery is rechargeable via micro USB, with a five hour battery life.

The App is compatible with IOS, Android and Apple Watch. It contains details of major airline’s weight restrictions, takes into account the weight of the device and has a luggage proximity alarm. The scale can also be used as a coat hanger.

Cruickshank stated: “One in five passengers is charged an average of £25 for excess baggage at the airport. In the UK alone, passengers forked out over £1.6 billion in charges in a single year. Multiply this globally and it is a huge problem; not only is it costing passengers dearly but it causes stress, hassle and inconvenience at the airport.”
