NETHERLANDS. KLM Tax Free Services and Kappé International are creating a major new 950sq m duty free store in the revamped and extended terminal one at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. The development is part of a phased expansion and refurbishment of the terminal.
KLM is Schiphol’s liquor and tobacco retailer and Kappé its fragrances and cosmetics specialist. Until now the two companies have operated separate stores at T1. Kappé International president Jacques Parson told The Moodie Report: “We wanted to design a concept so that liquor, tobacco, perfumes and cosmetics would all be under one roof – so that people can visit the four core categories in a one-stop shopping experience.”
Added KLM Tax Free Services director Airport Retail Ico Smid: “The airport authority is in favour of this and it is really looking good. Instead of having two stores with two openings and so on, we will have one large and inviting store, which will automatically bring more people into the stores.”
By integrating the categories, the two retailers hope to attract a more balanced male/female mix of passengers.
Parson said: “We both recognised that what we were doing independently did not make sense from a consumer perspective.” He said a highlight of the new beauty area will be a dedicated men’s products area and a more brand-focused treatment and make-up section.
Smid promised a new-look liquor offer with a greater sense of theatre. “It won’t just be bottles on back walls. We’ll be looking for new gifting ideas and a sense of fun and surprise.”
The retail development will continue on a phased basis over the next two years.
