Lagardère Travel Retail snaps up Geneva Airport duty free concession

SWITZERLAND. In big breaking news, Lagardère Travel Retail has been awarded the five-year duty free concession at Geneva Airport, effective from Q4 2017.

The French company, the world’s fourth-biggest travel retailer according to The Moodie Davitt Report’s annual Top 25 Travel Retailers ranking, will take the place of long-time incumbent The Nuance Group (now owned by Dufry).

The contract covers seven duty free stores across arrivals and departures.

Lagardère Travel Retail already operates an extensive specialist retail offer, including Your Fashion Store (pictured below) at the Swiss gateway.

Geneva Airport said that Lagardère and Nuance/Dufry had submitted “high quality” offers for the business in a tender process that began last October. It added: “This choice was made following a very rigorous review and evaluation.

“The financial and commercial concept-based analysis confirmed the high level of expertise and professionalism of the two bidders. However, the tender criteria placed Lagardère Travel Retail at the top of this demanding selection.

“The management of Genève Aéroport is looking forward to further developing its partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail, already an operator of multi-brand fashion shops, and in the past of the Relay kiosks.

“It expresses its deepest gratitude to the management and team of The Nuance Group for the fruitful cooperation developed with them for many years in duty free.”

Nuance/Dufry will continue to run a Victoria’s Secret store at the airport.

Lagardère Travel Retail said the new offer would be:

  • “Audacious:” The Aelia Duty Free personalised concept aims to highlight the best of French-speaking Switzerland, with enhanced Sense of Place;
  • “Innovative:” The retailer plans to redesign the customer path to clarify the offer and to increase interaction in the boutiques;
  • “Unique:” Two commercial tailor-made concepts have been created for Geneva: Le Club and Le Studio, offering cigars, wines and spirits, plus fragrances & cosmetics.

Lagardère Travel Retail Chairman & CEO Dag Rasmussen said: “We are extremely proud of this success and we would like to gratefully thank the management of Geneva International Airport for the trust they place in us.

“To fulfil the strong expectations in terms of concepts and services of the airport, our teams mobilised their forces to create boutiques expressing the highest international standards in duty free and bringing to the passengers in Geneva Airport a unique experience, within the framework of a sustainable and responsible investment.

“This success marks once again our determination to continue constructing our development, based on values of mutual trust, efficiency and quality.”
