Lancôme, part of the L’Oréal Group, is celebrating the roll-out of its HAPTA innovation, a handheld computerised makeup applicator designed for individuals with limited hand and arm mobility.
The device, launched in 2023, is aimed at improving accessibility in cosmetics application, offering precision and control to users with fine motor challenges.
HAPTA’s innovative design incorporates cutting-edge robotics technology and advanced motion-stabilising algorithms. The device provides enhanced precision and control, allowing users to apply makeup with the same level of accuracy as a professional.
Initially introduced in 2023, HAPTA is particularly beneficial for those with conditions such as arthritis, stroke-related impairments, or other physical disabilities that make the application of beauty products challenging.
The roll-out of HAPTA signals Lancôme’s continued focus on leveraging innovation to enhance beauty experiences for all consumers.
The technology behind HAPTA originates from Verily, a health technology company and part of the Alphabet group which specialises in precision robotics and assistive devices.
L’Oréal Deputy CEO in charge of Research, Innovation, and Technology Barbara Lavernos commented: “We believe that technology is a powerful enabler of change. HAPTA allows us to make beauty more inclusive, offering an opportunity for people with limited dexterity to enjoy a sense of empowerment and creativity in their daily beauty routines.”
The introduction of HAPTA is expected to create significant ripples within the beauty industry, particularly as inclusivity becomes an increasingly critical consideration for brands looking to engage with diverse consumer demographics. By addressing the needs of consumers with disabilities, Lancôme is broadening its appeal and demonstrating its commitment to providing accessible luxury beauty solutions.
Beyond the immediate impact of HAPTA, Lancôme is already looking ahead to further develop the product, exploring additional functions and adaptations to enhance its capabilities.
Future versions may include additional attachments, wider compatibility with various makeup products and improved battery life, as the brand seeks to continuously refine its offering based on user feedback and technological advancements.
HAPTA is the latest in a series of innovations from Lancôme that blur the lines between beauty and technology.
Lancôme’s dedication to innovation has been reflected in its portfolio of digital and tech-driven solutions, including virtual try-on tools, augmented-reality mirrors and personalised skincare consultations.
Lancôme Global Brand President Françoise Lehmann added: “HAPTA is not just a device; it’s a symbol of our vision for a more inclusive future in beauty.
“We will continue to push boundaries, making beauty a space where everyone can participate, express themselves and feel empowered.”
As Lancôme continues to pioneer solutions that bridge the gap between technology and personal care, HAPTA represents a significant leap forward in the luxury beauty market. The product’s focus on inclusivity, combined with its cutting-edge technology, signals a shift in how beauty brands can create meaningful innovations that meet the diverse needs of customers. ✈
