Lancôme has revealed further details of its new flagship feminine fragrance, La Vie Est Belle, unveiled earlier this month in Saint Jean Cap Ferrat, France. The scent will be available in travel retail worldwide from September.
According to Lancôme International President Youcef Nabi, La Vie Est Belle (which translates as “Life Is Beautiful”) represents a quest. It is the olfactory embodiment of a quest for meaning, of a new era characterised by the “˜less but better’ philosophy. It aims to represent the kind of beauty and femininity that does that not assail the senses; and is embraced, not imposed.

“Lancôme has long fostered this conviction, and shares it today with all women in the form of an exceptional creation,” she explained. “The fragrance of joy, of smiles and of freedom. The fragrance that makes life more beautiful!”

Last month I interviewed Madonna; on Wednesday I had dinner with Julia Roberts. The fact that there were nearly 300 other people in the room made it no less special, believe me. The event in question was the official reveal of the new feminine fragrance from Lancôme, called La Vie Est Belle. |

The juice, jointly created by Olivier Polge, Dominique Ropion and Anne Flipo, is described as a “tasty iris” and features only pure, not recomposed ingredients. It took three years and 5,521 versions to arrive at the final formula. The key ingredients include iris pallida, patchouli, a gourmand accord, sambac jasmine, and Tunisian orange blossom.
As previously reported, the flacon is a reworked version of a bottle Lancôme founder Armand Petitjean requested his then Artistic Director George Delhomme to create in 1949, entitled le sourire de cristal (the crystal smile). The new incarnation features the rounded imprint of a smile at the heart of a crystal square, and is finished with a pearlescent grey organza ribbon tied around the neck.
The fragrance face is actress Julia Roberts, who attended the launch dinner in France. Nabi explained: “There was only one person in the world who could embody this new fragrance: an icon of happy femininity and one of the world’s most famous and admired actresses. Of course this woman is Julia Roberts.”
Roberts appears in a campaign shot by Tarsem Singh. In it, Roberts is a guest at perfect yet soulless soirée, where everyone except her is dressed in black. When she looks in a mirror, she sees invisible threads which control the guests’ every move. Roberts frees herself of these threads, kicks off her shoes, and climbs a staircase of light leading to her own happiness and real life.
