London Heathrow Airport T2 to be named The Queen’s Terminal

The new T2 opens in 2014 amid major investment in Heathrow’s facilities

UK. Heathrow Airport’s new T2 will be named The Queen’s Terminal in honour of Her Majesty The Queen, the company has announced.

The new Terminal 2 will open next year, on 4 June 2014, nearly 60 years after The Queen opened the original Terminal 2. In 1955 she opened Heathrow’s first permanent passenger terminal, the Europa Building, which was later renamed Terminal 2, as well as the Queen’s Building and the airport’s original control tower.

Heathrow’s Development Director John Holland-Kaye said: “The Queen opened the original Terminal 2 more than half a century ago and we’re delighted that Her Majesty has kindly agreed to give her name to the new Terminal 2. Everyone at Heathrow is extremely proud of our long association with The Queen and we know the new Terminal 2 will be a fitting continuation of that tradition.”

The new T2 is the latest step in the upgrade of Heathrow, where £11 billion has been spent on capital improvements over the past ten years.

The terminal is on schedule to be completed in November 2013 and there will then be six months of testing before its June 2014 opening.

As reported, the facility will feature 52 shops and 17 bars and restaurants, which the airport said would “represent the best of modern Britain”. It will be home to 23 Star Alliance airlines, as well as carriers such as Aer Lingus, Virgin Atlantic Little Red and Germanwings. The terminal can handle 20 million passengers per year.
