SOUTH KOREA. Lotte Duty Free has laid down a key marker in its aim to become carbon neutral by 2040 by installing solar power generating panels across the roof of its Incheon Yeongjong-do Integrated Logistics Centre near Seoul.
The project, which took just two months to complete, will lead to the generation of 1,371 megawatts of solar power per year, enough to cover the annual energy needed for about 570 households.
This solar energy will replace about 67% of the electricity consumption of the logistics centre. It is expected that the move will reduce costs by about KRW200 million (US$169,000) per year and lower carbon emissions by 630 tonnes.
Lotte Duty Free CEO Lee Kap said: “With the completion of solar power plants, Lotte Duty Free plans to continue investing in creating an eco-friendly logistics environment. Lotte Duty Free will strive to achieve sustainable management throughout the business.”
The travel retailer is carrying out various activities relating to environmental management under the slogan ‘Duty 4 Earth’, as it makes strides towards its 2040 carbon neutrality goal.
In October, the company obtained Environmental Management System ISO 14001certification in recognition of its sustainability efforts.
