SOUTH KOREA. Lotte Duty Free World Tower store has been awarded three leading US design awards.
The company won first place in the Environments category in the 2015 Good Design Awards. It is the first time a Korean travel retailer has won the prize.
Separately, Lotte Duty Free has captured a Bronze Award in the Brand Experience category in the HUB Awards and a Merit award in the Graphis Competition (Innovative Environment category).
As reported in November, Lotte Duty Free lost the licence for its lucrative World Tower store after a contest for some of the country’s key downtown duty free contracts. This was the result of a new five-year open bidding system for downtown duty free permits.
The Lotte Duty Free World Tower store design is said to optimise the movement and convenience of shoppers, offer high ceilings to showcase the brands and a space that allows “shopping and culture to co-exist”.
Notably, Lotte Duty Free’s World Tower store has installed LED screens across what it calls its Media Wall, Columns (with cylindrical screens) and Cylinders (screens suspended from the ceilings).

The company has invested more than US$2.5 million in the installation, with US$500,000 on the initial stage of content development, said Lotte Duty Free.
The LED installations are integrated throughout the space and video footage changes through the day, featuring entertainment, local heritage and natural environments.
Lotte Duty Free President Sun-wook Jang said: “Lotte Duty Free World Tower has contributed a lot in promoting the new duty free shopping environment. I’m so glad that we won the prestigious global design awards for the first time as a Korean duty free shop.”
