INTERNATIONAL. MAC and Disney have joined forces to create a wicked make-up collection designed to celebrate the darkly glamorous side of consumers. The Venomous Villains line, on-counter now in travel retail, features four mini-collections themed around One Hundred and One Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil, Snow White’s Evil Queen, Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent and The Princess and the Frog’s Dr Facilier.
The products on offer – which are decorated with images of the relevant characters – include eye shadow, lipstick, Lipglass gloss, blusher, beauty powder, eyeliner, Lipgelée and nail polish. The shade palette incorporates pearlescent blacks, royal plums and rosy reds, with names such as Wicked Ways, Darkly My Dear, Vile Violet, She Who Dares and Revenge is Sweet.

MAC entices consumers to indulge their dark side with the new Disney Venomous Villains collection |
“Everybody loves a villain and wants to take a bite of forbidden fruit from time to time,” noted MAC Senior Vice President and Creative Director James Gager. “It’s great to be sweet and lovely and kind, of course, but it’s more interesting to be a little naughty, isn’t it? Disney has always created iconic ingénues, but their counterparts, the villains, are just as memorable. I’m sure every woman in the world has a little villain in her somewhere, whether she wants to admit it or not!”
Gager also defended the inclusion of male Villain, Dr Facilier. “We’re a brand for All Ages, All Races, All Sexes, so why not have a male villain?,” he explained. “I was watching the trailer for The Princess and the Frog and thought the whole New Orleans voodoo vibe was amazing. He’s also the most recent villain to come on the scene, so he’s very current.”
While the collection was inspired by fantasy characters, MAC has worked hard to ensure it is wearable for the everyday woman. “We definitely looked at the characters and considered who they were in terms of their different personalities and attitudes,” noted Vice President Product Development Jennifer Balbier. “Cruella De Vil and the Evil Queen have a “real woman” shade palette, so we went with trends we’ve seen recently, such as vibrant red lips.
“Maleficent is more surreal though – she was pure fantasy for us. That’s where we put in a lot of crazy purples, blackened shades and beautiful pearlised nails.”
She added: “Disney was kind enough to provide us with Pantones of actual colours used when drawing these characters throughout their history, so we were able to know the colours of everything, from the actual shade of Cruella’s lips down to the lining of her coat. These characters share deep, intense powerful shades and strong royal hues.”
Balbier concluded: “This whole collection is about transformation: Even a nice girl may have a naughty side, and she might want to step out and try a new look.”
Those sentiments are echoed by Johanna Mooney, Disney Consumer Products Beauty Director. “The new Venomous Villains collection”¦captures the essence of four iconic Disney villains in a way that is real and relatable to the modern woman,” she explained. “This collection will appeal to long-standing fans of Disney and MAC, as well as spark an interest for a whole new cadre of consumers who seek a uniquely bold look.”
Mooney added: “The collaboration”¦brings together two powerhouse companies in their respective industries and creates the perfect blend of storytelling and artistry. The Walt Disney Company was created on a foundation of storytelling that makes entertainment content everlasting and relevant through time. Having established tremendous credibility in the beauty industry, MAC delivers consumers an exceptional product experience that looks at makeup through an artistic lens.”
