Macau International Airport gains approval for reclamation and expansion project

MACAU, CHINA. Macau International Airport (MIA) last week obtained official approval for a reclamation and expansion project that will boost annual passenger capacity to 15 million and transform the Special Administrative Region (SAR) gateway’s operational capabilities.

The airport served 5.15 million passengers in 2023, representing 55% of the 9.6 million recorded in pre-pandemic 2019.

With strong support from the Central Government and Macau SAR Government, construction is expected to commence by the end of this year and be completed in the second half of 2030.

MIA said the initiation of the project “marks a new development milestone for the civil aviation industry in Macau”.

This will increase apron capacity by creating additional aircraft stands while reserving a 95m-wide water passage between the artificial island and the aircraft apron. The new facilities will significantly enhance the capacity of the passenger terminal and general aviation facilities, MIA said. ✈
