Macquarie Airports reports solid growth in passenger traffic across core portfolio in March – 18/04/08

Kerrie Mather: “Our core airport portfolio reported solid increases”

INTERNATIONAL. Macquarie Airports (MAp) has reported +6% growth in passenger traffic across its core portfolio of airports in March compared to the previous corresponding period (pcp) in 2007.

Passenger traffic at Sydney Airport grew by +6.1%, including +4.2% growth in international traffic. Copenhagen Airport posted +0.6% growth, but international traffic there increased +7.4%. Brussels and Bristol airports posted traffic rises of +11.1% and +12.1% respectively.

MAp Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather said: “In March our core airport portfolio reported a solid +6.0% increase in traffic versus the pcp. The early Easter public holiday resulted in reduced levels of business traffic whilst the leisure related school holiday traffic would have been delayed until April in several markets.

“The +4.2% increase in international traffic at Sydney is consistent with recent trends, excluding the very strong February result, and is particularly pleasing taking into account the +12.2% growth we experienced in March 2007.

“Elsewhere our airline marketing efforts continue to deliver above peer growth, particularly at Brussels, where the Jet Airways’ European hub goes from strength to strength.”

Sydney Airport

Total passenger traffic for March is estimated to have increased +6.1% on the pcp to 2.8 million, with domestic traffic estimated to be up +7.0% and international traffic (excluding domestic on-carriage) up +4.2% to 894,000 passengers.

Australian travellers increased (+9%) together with traveller growth from New Zealand (+11%), India (+24%), Canada (+19%), Germany (+7%), and France (+8%). Korea (-24%), Japan (-18%), and the US (-2%) were the major markets that declined, while the UK and China were flat.

Copenhagen Airport

March traffic was +0.6% higher than the pcp at 1.79 million passengers with O&D traffic up +5.3%. Easter in March this year had a negative impact on domestic volume, as business related traffic reduced over the holiday period.

International traffic increased +7.4% (to 1.17 million) versus the pcp and domestic traffic was down -12.2%.

Brussels Airport

Total traffic for March increased by +11.1% over the pcp to 1.48 million, with chargeable departing passengers up +10.0%.

Extra-EU traffic was +33.4% higher at 519,000 passengers and intra-EU traffic was +1.9% higher at 964,000, with the early Easter holiday period resulting in a reduction in business related traffic.

Bristol Airport

Overall traffic for March was +12.1% higher than the pcp at 503,000 passengers due to additional low cost and charter capacity. Domestic traffic was down -11.3%, due to the cessation of BA Connect’s services. International traffic increased +24.4% to 325,000, due to the opening of the new Ryanair base in November 2007.

Charter traffic was up +3.9% on the pcp due to additional capacity over the Easter period. Lufthansa started its thrice daily service to Frankfurt with SAS commencing thrice weekly flights to Oslo.
