Maui Jim updates original vintage designs with brand new features

Maui Jim has updated two of its original sunglass styles with new technology and materials.

Designed for fans of retro styling, the new Kolohe and Kawika are based on some of the first original designs ever created by the company that were invented on the beaches of Maui.

Both styles feature vintage details and thin, lightweight nylon frames that are accented with fine filigree-scrolled silver/nickel temples and nose bridges. They each have a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of US$289.

“We’ve seen a distinct return to the desire for fine detailing,” said Maui Jim Director of Product Development Richard Walker. “Some of our original styles are so perfect for today. So we’re bringing back some of our classics, but they’ve been copletely updated with the most hi-tech lenses and frame materials to offer the perfect combination of memorable styling and eye protection.”

Kolohe is available in three classic colour combinations: Black Gloss with Antique Pewter temples and Neutral Grey lenses for bright sunny days, and Tortoise with Antique Gold or Matte Tortoise with HCL Bronze lenses for variable light conditions. Suitable for smaller faces, the frame comes with adjustable silicone nose pads and traditional hinges for an optimal fit.

Kawika offers a modern twist on the retro trend with winged nylon lens toppers and temples combined with antique silver/nickel edging around the lenses and bridge. This style comes in Black Gloss with Antique Pewter and Neutral Grey lenses for bright sunny days, and Tortoise with Antique Gold and HCL Bronze lenses for variable light conditions. Designed for small to mid-size faces, the traditional hinges and adjustable silicone nose pads make this updated style suitable for everyday activities.

Both sunglasses also feature MauiPure lenses, touted by Maui Jim as the world’s clearest non-glass lenses that are ultra-lightweight, scratch- and impact-resistant. Offering ultra-clear views, these lenses are reportedly packed with up to nine layers of glare-cutting, UV-eliminating and colour-enhancing technology.

All Maui Jim sunglasses feature the company’s patented PolarizedPlus2 lens technology and bi-gradient mirrors that claim to cut 100% of UV rays and 99.9% of glare from above, below and behind each lens. Maui Jim also uses three rare earth elements and other treatments to white-balance its lenses, which is said to improve definition and depth perception while allowing wearers to see vivid colours.

Kolohe’s and Kawika’s lenses are also protected with waterproof and oleophobic coatings to shed water and snow and to repel grease and smudges.
