AUSTRALIA. Melbourne Airport’s commercial team will recommend a preferred partner for its duty free contract by mid-December from a final shortlist of three. The airport company will announce a winner once the board makes an approval and a contract is signed.
As reported, Melbourne Airport called for expressions of interest for its duty free licence at the airport’s international terminal last May. Incumbent Dufry’s contract ends in late May 2023.
Australia’s second-busiest airport is offering an experienced partner the opportunity to deliver an “exceptional” duty free experience across the international terminal’s existing 3,600m duty free space as well as the airport’s online ecommerce platform.
Melbourne Airport Chief of Commercial Property and Retail Andrew Gardiner told The Moodie Davitt Report: “We are privileged to have interest from all of the major duty free companies. We have been impressed by the quality of submissions by all parties.”
Some 11 Expressions of Interest were received in the duty free concession, which was later reduced to seven candidates, then six and now a shortlist of three.
The airport company has continued to invest in commercial and consumer-facing services through the pandemic, with international passenger numbers forecast to more than double by 2042 to over 29 million, up from 11.6 million in 2019.
Passenger traffic has recovered to about 90% of 2019 passenger numbers for domestic and 65% for international, with only three more stores that had been closed yet to open.
