USA. The Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners this week approved a capital improvement programme at Miami International Airport that will fund up to US$5 billion in modernisation projects over the next 15 years.
It will feature extensive terminal upgrades and pave the way for future growth in passenger traffic, which is projected to reach 77 million by 2040, from 45 million in 2018.
The investment will include five sub-programmes: a redevelopment of Central Terminal concourses E and F; an expanded South Terminal (concourses H and J); renovated Concourse D gates to accommodate additional wide- and narrow-body aircraft, as well as larger regional jets; two new hotels and other miscellaneous landside projects; and expanded aircraft parking positions and warehouses for cargo operations.
“MIA is Miami-Dade County’s leading economic engine and busiest gateway, generating nearly US$31 billion in business revenue and welcoming 96% of all visitors to our community,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “The goal of this new capital programme is for MIA to provide even greater value, convenience and efficiency to our visitors, airline partners and cargo operators.”
Miami Airport Director and CEO Lester Sola said: “Because of the programme’s phased structure, we look forward to delivering to our passengers and business partners new and improved airport facilities.”
The Florida gateway served 21.8 international passengers in 2018, making it the third-busiest US airport for international traffic.
