Milan Malpensa: Major makeover planned in time for Expo 2015 |
ITALY. Milan Malpensa Airport is planning a major reconstruction of Terminal 1 in time for Expo 2015 – with an ambitious expansion of commercial space at its heart.
The new Malpensa T1 will have a 13,000sq m shopping area, featuring 46 stores and said to be one of the largest in Europe. It will include a 2,500sq m duty free area (Dufry is the incumbent duty free concessionaire).
The new mall will increase the total commercial space in the departures area to 23,000sq m with around 100 restaurants, bars and shops in total.
Retail and F&B space will reach around 23,000sq m in Departures |
The airport company said: “The design of the new shopping gallery will have a strong Italian flavour, and in tribute to the city of Milan will resemble the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in appearance. It will be home to some of the world’s best known luxury brands, all concentrated in a “˜Luxury Square’. The new gallery will become a destination in its own right, rather than a mere passage area.”
Brands will include Bulgari, Armani, Ermenegildo Zegna, Etro, Gucci, Hermès, Montblanc, Salvatore Ferragamo and Ferrari.
Terminal 1 will have a total surface area of 350,000sq m, 90 boarding gates and up to 270 check-in desks, 41 loading bridges and will be the first Italian airport able to accommodate two Airbus A380s simultaneously.
There will be renovations and expansions of the Arrivals Hall, the check-in level and the entrance to the airport from the railway station (for an investment of €30 million). The architect is Gregorio Caccia Dominioni.
This is the biggest investment in Malpensa since 1998 |
