GERMANY. German supplier Minox has created a product that helps outdoor enthusiasts minimise sun damage by estimating the maximum length of time considered safe for sun exposure.
The watch-style Suntimer device (€39) uses special sensors to read the intensity of the ultraviolet (UV) in the sunlight.
To determine an optimum time to stay in the sun, personal data can be programmed into the instrument, such as skin type and the protection factor of sunscreen in use.
The user gets a maximum time reading which is individually adjusted to his or her personal profile. When that time expires, an alarm sounds.
A universal fixing band allows the Suntimer to be worn on the upper arm, on the wrist, on a backpack or baby buggy.
The product measures the sun’s radiation constantly. With its dynamic calculations, it also readjusts when there is little or no radiation acting on the sensor when indoors or in the shade. The Suntimer can also be used as a watch, stop watch and alarm.

According to Minox, the model has been listed on a European airline and also an Australian airline, and will be available on the carriers next March.
The company has also reported significant interest from buyers for its products, in particular the Leica M3 miniature camera and the DMP3 multimedia player, which were showcased at TFWA World Exhibition in October.
The Leica M3 (€199), available in compact metal packaging specially designed for travel retail, has secured listings on three major European airlines.
The DMP3 (€199), already listed on several major European and Asia Pacific airlines, will be available for sale onboard a Middle Eastern airline and also a European airline next year.
Minox puts its success down to “the [absence] of comparisons for Minox novelties worldwide and the reasonable prices”.
The Minox novelties, such as the collectible cameras and miniature multimedia players, are now available in duty free and travel retail.
