MMI & ELR chief Andrew Day honoured as Keeper of the Quaich

UAE. Emirates Leisure Retail (ELR) and Maritime and Mercantile International Group CEO Andrew Day has been inducted as a Keeper of the Quaich, one of the most prestigious accolades in the Scotch whisky industry.

Keepers of the Quaich is an exclusive international society which recognises outstanding commitment to Scotch whisky, inducting a limited number of new Keepers each year.

2022 inductees join a group of 2,800 recipients, coming from over 100 countries. They were welcomed into the society at an event at Scotland’s Blair Castle – the historic home of the Earls and Dukes of Atholl – last month, hosted by Keepers of the Quaich Chairman Ian Smith.

Andrew Day: “A tremendous honour”

“Being invited to join the Keepers of the Quaich is a tremendous honour,” Day said. “The society represents the most important expression of the Scotch whisky industry and I look forward to continuing to promote and preserve the great legacy that it has to celebrate.

“My goal has been to challenge the team to bring enthusiasts and collectors alike great expressions of unique whiskies.

“Over the last two decades, our partnership with The Macallan has been the best example of this, from launching the Macallan Boutique in 2019, bringing great whiskies to the region and celebrating world record sales of The Macallan 1926.”

MMI UAE & Oman Managing Director Mike Glen commented: “Andrew’s induction is a cause for celebration, recognising his fantastic contribution to the industry, particularly in the Middle East. Since he joined MMI in 2007, his leadership paved the way for some remarkable firsts for the industry, beginning with the launch of the award-winning fine wine and luxury spirits retailer Le Clos [owned by MMI].

“Le Clos has built a reputation internationally for our extensive range of The Macallan, and other world-class whiskies, and during its operation, has been able to celebrate four record-breaking sales, US$2 million in orders in just 24 hours in the midst of the pandemic, and recorded sales of the ‘holy grail of whisky’, The Macallan 1926.”

Since opening its first store at Dubai International Airport (DXB) in 2008, Le Clos has brought to market some of the world’s rarest and most sought-after products, seeking to set the benchmark in fine wine and luxury spirits retailing.
