Mondelez International scales up Toblerone production with US$79 million facility upgrade

Mondelez International has invested CHF65 million (US$79.8 million) to modernise its Toblerone manufacturing facility in Bern, Switzerland.

This investment seeks to establish what the company describes as a “global centre for excellence” for Toblerone in Bern, where the brand was founded in 1908, and where 90% of its global production remains.

The initiative supports Toblerone’s growth in the premium chocolate category, leveraging its established global presence and reaffirming its status in travel retail.

The Bern plant will scale up with a modern production line, set to begin operations in autumn, to meet the growing demand for premium chocolates.

The investment also includes expanding the site’s chocolate and nougat production capabilities while upgrading infrastructure and logistics systems.

The move represents one of Mondelez International’s largest investments in its European chocolate production network over the past decade.

Highlighting its goals to lead the premium chocolate segment by 2030, the company is tapping into Toblerone’s global popularity, distinct brand identity and strong travel retail presence.

As a nod to the product’s origins, Toblerone tablets made in Bern will feature the Swiss flag on their packaging.

Mondelez World Travel Retail Vice President of Special Businesses and Managing Director Joost Rosmuller said, “Toblerone is one of the most famous chocolate brands in the world with tremendous potential.

“Our centre of excellence in Switzerland, from where we proudly bring our brand and chocolate expertise around the world, is key to the brand’s growth ambition to win in the premium segment.”

Mondelez International Plant Director for Toblerone Tim Spickenbaum added, “Our plant has been a cornerstone of  the Toblerone production for decades. Already today we manufacture on average 4 million Toblerone products per production day.

“We are therefore delighted about the planned modernisations and investments, which will not only enhance our manufacturing capacity but also solidify Bern’s position as the home and heart of the triangular brand icon.” ✈
