Montblanc has launched a series of limited-edition Great Characters Miles Davis writing instruments, which are styled after the trumpet and pay tribute to a pioneer of jazz music.
The brand’s Great Characters range honours individuals whose lives and work have been remarkable. Revolutionary jazz musician Miles Dewey Davis is described as one of the most important musicians and jazz composers of the 20th century.

“Miles Davis’s innovative approach to musical exploration is interpreted through pioneering design and fine craftsmanship that are at the very heart of Montblanc’s heritage,” the brand stated.
The writing instruments, which are available now in Montblanc boutiques worldwide, feature trumpet valves on the clip and cones shaped like the special ‘Heim’ mouthpiece Davis used to play.
The Montblanc Miles David Special Edition, in Fountain Pen, Rollerball and Ballpoint Pen, has black resin cap and barrel with contrasting platinum-coated fittings. The trumpet piston design and mouthpiece-shaped cone is found on each of the three editions.
The pattern on the cap and barrel is said to echo the five diverse movements – Be-bop, Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, Modal Jazz and Jazz Fusion – that Davis was part of.
“With each of its creative details, the Great Characters Edition tells the story of an extraordinary man always searching for a new sound or style, a cultural icon who would influence the course of 20th century music forever,” Montblanc stated.
The Miles Davis Limited Edition 90 is limited to 90 pieces to mark what would have been Davis’s birthday in 2016. Its cap design includes an inlaid trumpet in red gold, the rhodium-plated gold nib is decorated with an engraving of a trumpet and the Montblanc logo is crafted in mother of pearl. The blue colour recalls Davis’s Kind of Blue album which is regarded by critics as one of the greatest jazz recordings of all time.
Montblanc describes its Miles Davis Limited Edition 1926 as a “masterpiece of the finest Montblanc engraving”. Available as a fountain pen or roller ball, this edition features platinum-coated fittings and the Montblanc emblem in black and white agate. The gold nib is engraved with a silhouette of Davis.
