CUBA. For more than 30 years no new format has been created in the size range of the Montecristo brand. Brand owner Habanos has chosen the title Edmundo – the main character of the novel after which the brand was named – for its new cigar, which it hopes will take the Montecristo brand forward.
Habanos chose the occasion of the launch to praise the dedication and love given by Cuban agriculture and industry to the creation of a format that has been long awaited by cigar smokers.
The tobacco blend is prepared with selected leaves from Vegas Finas de Primera in Cuba’s Vuelta Abajo region.
Following an enthusiastic reception from Habanos’ exclusive distributors in all its markets, the company said the new Edmundo line will be launched gradually across the world starting from 13 May 2004 in Paris, home of the Count of Montecristo legend.
Montecristo is the world’s best-known Habanos brand, and also the best seller. The origin of its name is to be found in the readings organised for Havana factory workers in the last century. Most popular among the readings was the novel The Count of Montecristo, whose name was finally given to the brand.
With its traditional and proven blend, the medium- to full-flavoured 52 ring gauge Edmundo is 135 mm long – described as ‘a suitable length for today’s pace of life’.
