Moodie Davitt and Jessica’s Secret to host dedicated webinar on implications of new Chinese data privacy law

CHINA. The Moodie Davitt Report and Jessica’s Secret are to jointly host a webinar on Wednesday, 17 November at 16.00 Beijing time to discuss the implications for the travel retail and brand community of China’s new Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) which came into effect on 1 November after being adopted on 20 August.

The PIPL is China’s first comprehensive data privacy law and is designed to offer greater privacy protection to consumers.

The PIPL stipulates how data can be collected and used within China while also governing the actions of companies seeking to move data out of the country. It governs the use and handling of personal information, regulating how companies “collect, store, use, process, share, provide, transfer, and delete information” of Chinese citizens at home and abroad.

“The law will reshape how companies in China do business, but will also send huge ripples around the world,” wrote specialist technology publication Wired in an article headed ‘Ignore China’s New Data Privacy Law at Your Peril’.

The webinar, moderated by The Moodie Davitt Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie, will feature a range of expert speakers, including Stephen Peng, a Senior Partner at leading Chinese law firm Jincheng Tongda & Neal and a contributor to Oriental Travel Retail Observer, the acclaimed monthly travel retail research project produced with Jessica’s Secret and available by subscription through The Moodie Davitt Report.

He will be joined by Jessica’s Secret Founder & CEO Mirko Wang, who first identified the implications of the new law for the travel retail industry, and other speakers to be named. Attendance is free but by registration (see footnote).

“After the PIPL came into effect, many brands and retailers came to us to ask about its impact, so we have organised this webinar to help travel retail stakeholders to identify and resolve any issues,” said Wang.

“The PIPL has multiple repercussions for Chinese and international travel retailers and brands,” he added. “For example, many retailers have set up pre-order service websites. When Chinese tourists order online, they enter their personal information. According to the new regulations, those websites may have to undergo a security assessment to comply with Chinese laws.

“Similarly, many brands advertise in Chinese media and based on that advertising generate personal information and transmit it overseas. Many international travel brands have also opened apps and WeChat programmes in China, which also involves collecting personal information, including geographical location, photo albums and so on and send it to their international or regional headquarters for data analysis.

“Additionally many international retailers are concerned at the PIPL’s implications in terms of the information they seek from Chinese tourists who visit the physical stores while abroad – including name, passport number and flight information.

“We will be discussing all these points and more at the webinar.”
