GERMANY. Munich Airport posted an all-time high for passenger numbers in 2015, with volumes climbing by +3.2% year-on-year to 41 million. It is the first time that the Bavarian airport has topped the 40 million passenger mark.
The figures were buoyed in particular by growth in international traffic, with the intercontinental segment posting an increase of over +4% to about 6.5 million passengers. Demand was particularly strong on Asian routes, on which passenger numbers rose by +7% compared with 2014, hitting 3.1 million.
European traffic, at 28.4 million passengers in 2015, remained the largest traffic segment. This grew by +3% over the 2014 figure.
Traffic on domestic routes within Germany climbed by +2.5% to 9.6 million passengers. The growth would have been higher without the cancellations of flights to and from Munich caused by labour disputes last year. A total of 2,500 take-offs and landings had to be cancelled during the strikes, affecting about 300,000 travellers.
Looking ahead, Munich Airport President and CEO Michael Kerkloh said: : “Global mobility continues to grow and all traffic forecasts indicate substantial increases. In Munich we are already anticipating a significant rise in the number of aircraft movements with the start of the coming summer timetable period. Based on slot reservations to date, we can expect an increase of about +4% in the number of take-offs and landings in 2016. That represents 15,000 additional aircraft movements.”
