Narita Airport international passenger traffic reaches record high in Golden Week; falls short of expectations – 12/05/05

JAPAN. The total number of passengers on international flights through Tokyo Narita Airport reached a record high of 856,000 during the Golden Week holiday period between 28 April and 8 May, 2005.

Despite the record high, the figure still fell short of the initial expectations of 897,000 passengers, based on the number of ticket reservations of airlines servicing international flights through the airport. Local reports attributed the setback to the opening of the Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) near Nagoya, central Japan, in February 2005 and the anti-Japan demonstrations held in China since April.

The 2005 Golden Week figure exceeded by 10,000 the number of passengers on international flights serviced by Narita last year.

The daily number of passengers leaving Japan through Narita peaked at 56,000 on 29 April, 2005. The daily peak of 51,000 returning passengers was registered on 5 May, 2005.
