New airport terminal to address Bangalore’s growing aviation needs

INDIA. On 14 December Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) will officially open the doors of a brand new Terminal 1A at Bengaluru International Airport.

The launch of the new terminal also coincides with the renaming of the airport to Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru

The launch of the new terminal also coincides with the renaming of the airport to Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.

Karnataka Chief Minister Shri. Siddaramaiah and Civil Aviation Minister Shri. Ajit Singh will preside over the name change initiation and the T1A inauguration.

The opening and renaming of the new terminal signifies the importance of Bangalore as a travel hub. The new, expanded terminal spans over 150,500sq m – doubling the previous floor area – which will allow the airport to accommodate increased airport passenger traffic. Over the past 18 months, the airport has added new routes including direct flights between Bangalore and Bangkok, operated by SpiceJet and Air Costa airlines.

The architecture reflects the cultural heritage of Karnataka as well as Bengaluru’s reputation of being the “˜Garden City’, said BIAL Managing Director G. V. Sanjay Reddy.

“The new name honours Kempegowda, founding father of Bangalore and the renaming is being timed with the opening of the T1A where the facilities, radiant interiors and exteriors mirror the rich culture of Karnataka and the vibrant colours of the Garden City.

“With T1A, we want our passengers to experience everything that’s unique about the Bangalore of yesteryear when he/she enters the airport and, at the same time, enjoy the benefits of world class facilities.”

New facilities and services for passengers include additional immigration and emigration counters, check-in counters and common use self-service stands. The terminal also features specially commissioned artwork by painters and sculptors to reflect the local culture and Karnataka region, food & beverage outlets to showcase Karnataka and South India cuisine, as well as retail shops selling souvenirs from the region.

Looking ahead, BIAL is planning to further expand the airport by adding a brand new Terminal 2, as part of the next phase of expansion.

The new terminal is part of a long-term strategy to expand the airport with the opening of a second terminal planned for the next phase
