New Stansted Airport arrivals terminal to feature extensive dining and shopping offer

UK. Extensive retail and F&B offerings will feature in a new 39,000sq m arrivals terminal at London Stansted Airport “but we’re still at the design stage at the moment” an airport spokesperson told The Moodie Davitt Report.

Relaxed and open spaces will mark the retail and F&B offers at the new arrival terminal.

Work on an all-new £150 million (US$191 million) building – part of a much larger £600 million (US$766 million) airport transformation – will begin shortly and is scheduled for completion in autumn 2020. In a break from traditional design, Stansted – owned by Manchester Airports Group – will become the only airport in the UK operating dedicated arrivals and departures terminals at that time.

Mace has been named as the main construction contractor for the project which will include larger immigration and baggage reclaim areas, new retail facilities, a public forecourt and improved access for all onward transport options.

The new arrivals building will sit beside the existing terminal (in the background).

London Stansted Airport CEO Ken O’ Toole said: “Our transformation is really gathering momentum. We’ve made fantastic progress so far, but it’s this year when it starts to take-off. The arrivals terminal is the most significant contract the airport has awarded as part of this project, and when complete it will provide a first-class, technology enabled, experience for our passengers.”

Meanwhile. through a complex sequence of reconfiguration and modernisation, the existing terminal building will become a facility totally dedicated to the departures process. The reconfiguration includes expansion of the existing check-in, security and retail areas.

The overall £600 million programme is being led by global design practice Pascall+Watson. Its London-based airport retail specialist, Portland Design, is also part of the airport transformation team.

In 2018, London Stansted Airport passed the 28 million passenger mark for the first time. The gateway added six new airlines to its roster while seeing capacity increases from some of its leading low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and Jet2.com.
