CHINA. Nielsen Media Research has appointed Gayle Cunningham Executive Director, Nielsen Media Research, Hong Kong/Mainland China, with immediate effect.

Cunningham moves to her new role from her previous position as Director, Agency Client Service and Production at Nielsen Media Research Australia, a position she has held since 2001.

Cunningham will lead the development and growth of Nielsen Media Research’s advertising information services (AIS), readership, radio measurement and other related media services in Hong Kong and mainland China, and will work closely with clients in both markets to ensure their needs are optimised.

“Gayle brings to her new role over 15 years’ experience in client service and operations, with a proven track record in both disciplines,” commented Richard Basil Jones, Managing Director, Nielsen Media Research, Asia Pacific. “A seasoned media executive and business leader, Gayle has an in-depth understanding of the media industry and I am confident she will make a significant contribution to the business in Hong Kong and mainland China.”

In a separate development, Dutch media group VNU, owner of market research company ACNielsen, has announced a merger with US healthcare data provider IMS Health. VNU has agreed to buy the US healthcare data provider for US$5.8 billion (£3.9 billion) in cash and shares, a move that will almost double the size of VNU.

ACNielsen provides market information gathered from a wide range of sources, management tools, analytical systems and methodologies which supports their clients’ business strategy. Its market-measurement services covers information pertaining to retail sales to consumers of fast-moving consumer packaged goods, gathered at the point of sale, and also purchases by consumers of packaged goods and other products, gathered through participating panels of consumer households and through customized studies.
