Penderyn named European Whisky of the Year in influential whisky guide

Welsh whisky distiller Penderyn’s Madeira Single Cask Edition has been named European Whisky of the Year in the latest edition of Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible.

The expression, which was created for the German market, scored a 96.5/100 rating from independent whisky expert Jim Murray who tastes 1,250 new whiskies each year.

It is Penderyn’s third success in this category of the Whisky Bible following the Swansea City Premier League Edition in 2013, and the Bryn Terfel Icons of Wales Edition in 2018. The title follows Penderyn’s Gold Medal successes at the International Wine and Spirit Awards, San Francisco Spirits Competition and Whiskies of the World Awards earlier this year.

Going for gold: Penderyn has notched up a succession of awards this year

Penderyn CEO Stephen Davies said: “Jim Murray is the main name you associate with expert whisky analysis. To hear that this bottling has been named European Whisky of the Year is wonderful news. To be one of only six highlighted bottles from over 5,000 whiskies is very pleasing.”

As reported, Penderyn is represented in the Americas and other selected travel retail markets by Haleybrooke International, in collaboration with UK travel retail specialist Richard McGratty of McG Consultants.

Penderyn is an independent distillery located in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales, UK. Each cask of its Penderyn single malt whisky is nosed and tasted by an all-female distilling team and the whisky is finished in ex-Madeira barrique barrels.

The distillery is known for combining a respect of whisky production heritage with an innovative approach to distilling, marketing and branding.

“This year’s success is only the beginning. We have all travelled a long road to get here, and are developing several exciting new ideas which we are certain our customers are going to enjoy,” Davies added.
