Penha and Café Barista awarded duty free and F&B contracts at Curaçao International Airport

CURAÇAO. Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP) has awarded family-owned beauty retailer Penha a five-year contract to operate duty free at Curaçao International Airport. The concession was previously operated by Dufry (since 2004).

Local company Café Barista was awarded the contract to operate a food court and bar in departures. CAP confirmed both appointments to The Moodie Davitt Report today after the story broke originally in the Curaçao Chronicle.

The tender process for both contracts began in November 2017. Both companies are tasked with “combining the demand for a high-end innovative experience with the local Curaçao touch and charm”, said CAP.

Penha, which runs downtown duty free stores across the Caribbean – in Aruba, Curaçao, Grand Cayman, St. Maarten and St. Thomas (US Virgin Islands) –is set to quadruple the duty free space at the airport. It will introduce a walk-through duty free concept in departures at the end of 2018. An arrivals store will open first this summer.

The new contracts are part of a wider terminal expansion project by private airport operator CAP. The company is a consortium of international investors including Zürich Airport, Dutch developer Janssen De Jong Group and Brazil’s CCR Group.

CAP has invested US$25 million in the terminal expansion and government company Curaçao Airport Holding has invested US$10 million.

CAP’s 30-year concession with the Government of Curaçao involves the operation, development and management of Curaçao International Airport until 2033.
