The new spatial plan offers improved commercial opportunities, say Pragma Consulting and The Design Solution |
MALTA. Pragma Consulting and The Design Solution are finalising the development of a new commercial offer at Malta International Airport. The move comes as the airport expands its terminal building to cope with increasing passenger numbers.
Following the airport authority’s decision to relocate the security area between Arrivals and Departures, Pragma Consulting and The Design Solution have planned what they describe as “a unique walk-through duty free shop” that carefully channels passengers around a centrally located lift core before entering the heart of the lounge.
It is predicted by 2011 that passenger numbers at Malta Airport will hit 3.5 million a year, up from 2.97 million in 2007. With seasonal traffic the two companies had to balance the appropriate amount of space at peak times while recognising the need to ensure a year-round commercial offer.
“The real challenge here was to develop a strong commercial offer for increasing, and seasonal, passenger flows without substantial increases to the building,” said Pragma Consulting Project Director Mark Entwistle. “This was achieved with a unique solution to a walk-through duty free store through previously unused deep space, before entering a central commercial area. Currently, shops and restaurants are fragmented and difficult to access. We also undertook passenger interviews to ensure that the future offer closely matched the needs of the target customer.”
The Design Solution developed a plan for the lounge that used food & beverage to anchor the space with retail outlets located in between. The clear and concise arrangement ensured that all passengers could see the commercial facilities on offer while retaining a visible relationship between the terminal and aircraft. This allowed niche retail to be located in high-traffic areas.
